Yamile Saied Méndez

What: Yamile Saied Méndez will appear in conversation with Samantha Mabry, moderated by Jasminne Mendez, to discuss Yamile's new book Furia. This event will take place on Blue Willow's Facebook Live stream.

When: Tuesday, September 15, 2020, 7:00pm

We work hard to bring events to our community for free, because connecting readers with authors is central to our mission. But these programs are not free for us to put on! If you’re interested in attending this event, we hope you’ll consider purchasing a copy of Furia or Tigers, Not Daughters from our bookshop.  As a thank you, we will include a signed book plate that you can place in your book. Your support is critical to keeping us here and offering events like this, and we hope to do that for many years to come!

About the Authors:

Yamile (sha-MEE-lay) Saied Méndez is a fútbol-obsessed Argentine American who loves meteor showers, summer, astrology, and pizza. She lives in Utah with her Puerto Rican husband and their five kids, two adorable dogs, and one majestic cat. An inaugural Walter Dean Myers Grant recipient, she's a graduate of Voices of Our Nations (VONA) and the MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Méndez is also part of Las Musas, the first collective of women and nonbinary Latinx middle grade and young adult authors. Furia is her first novel for young adult readers.

Samantha Mabry credits her tendency toward magical thinking to her Grandmother Garcia, who would wash money in the kitchen sink to rinse off any bad spirits. She teaches writing and Latino literature at a community college in Dallas, where she lives with her husband, a historian, and a cat named Mouse. She is the author of A Fierce and Subtle Poison and All the Wind in the World. Visit her online at samanthamabry.com or on Twitter: @samanthamabry.
