Novelist Abbi Waxman Chats Books, Bookstores, and THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL
Are you a Jojo Moyes fan? Did you love AJ Fikry? Cuckoo for Kristan Higgins? Friends, have we got the book for you.
Meet Nina Hill. Nina enjoys her simple life of working in a bookshop and spending evenings reading or with her kick-butt trivia team. But when a lawyer reveals the large extended family Nina never knew she had, her carefully organized life is thrown into chaos. To make matters worse, there's a guy—he's Nina's trivia nemesis, and he's not nearly as big of a jerk as she thought. It's up to Nina to determine what will truly make her happy.... Are you hooked yet? The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is a warm, witty story of a woman coming into her own, and it's full of lovely asides about the joy of books and reading. It is, in the words of Event Coordinator Cathy Berner, "SO CHARMING!"
We're thrilled to welcome author Abbi Waxman to the shop on July 11th to introduce y'all to Nina in person, take questions, and sign books. It's going to be a wonderful evening. Nina Hill is such an engaging character. Where did your idea for her come from?
Well, thanks! She is inspired by all the young women I met last year when I was promoting my last book, Other People’s Houses. They were all so lovely, and smart and funny, and I wanted to write a book where they were the heroine.
No surprise, we’re suckers for books about bookstores. Nina works at a store called Knight’s, which sounds absolutely magical. Did you base it on any of your favorite bookstores?
Yes, it’s a very, very thinly disguised version of Chevalier's, on Larchmont Boulevard. Larchmont Village is a real place, and Chevalier's is a real bookstore.
How did you reach the decision to include pages from Nina’s day planner throughout the book? They’re such a fun window into her mind and emotions.
Her planner is such an important part of her life, and I always love books with ‘bits’ in them; maps and things like that. So it was a fun element to do. It also gave me another way to show her state of mind.
You include wonderful Easter Eggs for your readers—especially children's librarians and booksellers. Is there any personal significance to the books you chose to mention?
I only mentioned books and movies and things I love myself. Nina is a younger, prettier, cooler version of me, but we’ve read all the same books and love the same movies and TV. It’s strange…
We love that you included some of the characters we got to know and love from your previous books. Do you plan to continue writing about the Larchmont neighborhood and its wonderful inhabitants?
Originally this was going to be the last of a trilogy, and my next book is not Larchmont, nor is the one I plan to do after that. However, Nina was a lot of fun, so I may do another book about her…
Okay, a fun one: Say you’re put in charge of casting a Nina Hill movie. Who's your pick for the lead role?
Zoey Deutch is the perfect Nina. There are several other actresses I had in mind when I was writing her, but I think Ms. Deutch would be great.
What are you currently reading?
I’m going through a Robert Crais-fest right now. I love detective novels, it’s my favorite genre to read. I’m also reading the new Gary Taubes, The Case Against Sugar, because I’m trying to give it up, and I’m excited about the new Bill Bryson, which comes out in the fall. I read only non-fiction or detective fiction when I’m writing, which is most of the time. If I read my own genre I worry I’ll either steal someone else’s work, or just become discouraged and decide to go live behind a dumpster and eat cheese.
