Lois Lowry’s breakthrough dystopian novel, THE GIVER, published in 1993, has been read by millions of people around the world. It left many with lingering questions: What happened to Jonas and Gabriel? Is a perfect society possible? What does it mean to live a complete life? With SON, Lowry continues to wrestle with the idea of human freedom while completing the story of Jonas and the baby he rescued.
Told in three separate story lines, SON combines elements from the first three novels in Lowry’s Giver Quartet—THE GIVER (1994 Newbery Medal winner), GATHERINE BLUE, and MESSENGER—into a thought-provoking, page-turning narrative. Readers are thrust back into the claustrophobic world of THE GIVER and meet fourteen-year-old Claire. Claire is Gabriel’s birth mother, and like Jonas, she starts to realize her idealized, orchestrated life—without love, feelings, or real relationships—is empty of true purpose. She breaks all the rules to try to see the child that was taken from her and is devastated when she learns he has disappeared with Jonas.
Making the same choice Jonas did, Claire escapes from that constricted world. She experiences freedom for the first time. She sees how a mother can give birth and bond with her newborn baby. She starts a tentative romance. But she can’t forget the child that was taken from her, and she leaves this new place and her new happiness because she longs for her missing son. She will sacrifice anything to find him.
Woven throughout this tale are characters from the other books in the quartet: duplicitous Trademaster from MESSENGER; loving Kira from GATHERING BLUE; and of course, brave Jonas and Gabriel, now a teenager fighting demons of his own. All the characters elegantly come together, living in a world marked by love and personal freedom, but everything comes to head in a final clash between good and evil.
