Begun in 2014, the Bookworm Festival is a fun morning at Spring Oaks Middle School that celebrates emerging readers, and those who write for them. Librarians and language arts teachers from across Houston comprise the steering committee for this event. Their goal is to connect emerging readers with authors to foster the joy of reading. This year's festival features a keynote address by Matt de la Peña and Loren Long, whose new collaboration, Love, hits shelves this January. Matt de la Peña is the author of Last Stop on Market Street, which won the Newbery Medal and was chosen for a Caldecott Honor. He is also the author the award-winning picture book A Nation's Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis and six critically-acclaimed young adult novels.
Loren Long has putt puff puttedy chuffed his way all over the bestseller lists as the author of the Otis series, among others. He was also honored to have the opportunity to modernize the classic The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, illustrate Good Day, Good Night by Margaret Wise Brown, and illustrate Of Thee I Sing by President Barack Obama.
Lisa Mantchev is the author of bestselling picture books like Someday, Narwhal. She grew up in the small Northern California town of Ukiah. She wrote her first play in the fourth grade, and has been involved in theater ever since.
Ethan Long is the Geisel Award-winning author and illustrator of Up, Tall and High!, as well as many other picture books, including Fright Club, Scribbles and Ink, and Chamelia and the New Kid in Class. He also created Tasty Time with ZeFronk on the Disney Channel. Ethan lives in Orlando, Florida.
Tammi Sauer is a full-time children's book author who presents at schools and conferences across the nation. She is the author of twenty-eight picture books, including Wordy Birdy, Cowboy Camp, Chicken Dance, Nugget & Fang, and Princess in Training. In addition to winning awards, Tammi's books have gone on to do great things: Chicken Dance: The Musical is on a national tour, and Your Alien, an NPR Best Book, has been published in French, Italian, Korean, and Spanish.
Todd Parr has inspired and empowered children around the world with his bold images and positive messages. He is the bestselling author of more than forty books, including Be Who You Are, The Goodbye Book, The Family Book, The I Love You Book, and It's Okay to be Different. He lives in Berkeley, California.
Sherri Duskey Rinker is the author of #1 New York Times bestsellers Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site and Steam Train, Dream Train, as well as Mighty, Mighty Construction Site.
